  • San Miguel High School Welcomes New Principal

Mr. Michael Richards comes to the role of principal at San Miguel High School with more than twenty years of local, national and international experience as a classroom teacher, school administrator, curriculum resource developer and leader of programs in teacher training, principal development, and institutional learning for Catholic schools.

This is a return to San Miguel for Richards, having previously served as a founding faculty member, assistant principal, and director of the Corporate Work Study Program.

In accepting this position as principal at San Miguel High School, Richards is returning to his roots in Lasallian Catholic education and the Cristo Rey Network. In previous positions, he’s supported San Miguel and other schools nationally in the development of a rigorous, college-ready curriculum of standards and benchmarks, associated mastery rubrics, and aligned summative course assessments. He’s also led professional development programs to assist teachers and principals in planning and instructional practice related to that curriculum.

In his most recent position with the Enhancing Catholic School Identity (ECSI) Research Group at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, Richards supported the learning of teachers and principals internationally through the development of research-based tools, resources, and programs for enhancing Catholic school identity and mission. Additionally, he also assisted first-generation international students in his role as study advisor and supported several language learning and cultural exchange initiatives in North Africa and the Middle East.

  • The School that works

San Miguel High School, a Catholic, Lasallian learning community, empowers youth from underserved families through the integration of Christian values, rigorous academics and practical work experience, educating the whole student for college, career and a fulfilling life.

San Miguel High School opened in 2004 in order to create a learning community where students from families of limited financial means have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. San Miguel is located in Tucson’s economically depressed south side where fifty percent of adult residents do not have a high school education and forty-two percent earn less than $25,000 per year.

At San Miguel, students take a full college preparatory course load while simultaneously holding internships, working in corporations and earning nearly forty percent of their school tuition. The Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) at San Miguel gives students the opportunity to form new identities as citizens and professionals who have bright futures.

  • Celebrating 10 Years - El Otro Lado

El Otro Lado, which means “the other side”, is a US/Mexico border immersion program hosted by San Miguel High School. This program provides Lasallian students with the opportunity to explore the US/Mexico border and learn about the many complexities of immigration. Through this five-day immersion program students and participating staff members learn about, and experience in part, the hard journey our brothers and sisters that cross from “El Otro Lado” endure. In addition to informing participants of the hundreds of migrant deaths that occur in the Arizona desert, El Otro Lado allows students to interact with humanitarian aid groups, Border Patrol agents and those directly impacted by US immigration policy.
